Baptism, which is the first sacrament we receive, opens the door to all the other sacraments. Through the waters of Baptism, a person becomes a Christian and a member of the Church. Baptism is the beginning of our discipleship in Jesus Christ.
The church baptizes infants, children, teenagers and adults. Infants and children are baptized when their parents are ready to accept the responsibility of raising them in the Catholic faith.
Families who are having their child baptized, first participate in a brief instruction to better help them understand the commitment of Christian parenthood.
Godparents are individuals, chosen by parents, who promise to assist the parents in raising their child in the Catholic faith. For this reason, godparents are expected to be Catholics who are good examples and role models of Catholic living. Godparents are asked to present a letter from their respective parishes, attesting to their suitability in assuming this role. The letter must be received before the actual baptism. A baptized Christian non-Catholic is welcome to serve alongside a godparent as a Christian Witness. The Christian Witness is asked to assist in the religious formation of the child insofar as he or she is able and understand the role he or she is undertaking.
Baptisms are generally celebrated on Saturdays or Sundays during Mass. However, for good reasons, the baptism liturgy may be scheduled for another time.
Infants and children from other parishes are most welcome to be baptized here. However, we must receive permission from their pastor granting us delegation to celebrate the baptism here.
Arrangements for Baptism may be made by contacting the parish office. The date is set after the parents have met with the baptismal coordinator, Janine Gould . There is no fee or charge connected with baptisms. The actual baptismal is always preceded by a brief rehearsal.
For more information concerning the celebration of baptisms, please contact the parish office.
